Use these instructions to help you change the glass for fixed windows.
Removal of the Glass in a Fixed Window
Tools Required
- Methyl Hydrate (available at most hardware, auto, or paint stores; works best). Rubbing alcohol can also be used to dissolve the silicone.
- Box knife
- Glass suction cups
- Silicone and butyl tape (for reinstallation)
Removal Steps
- It may be easier to remove the window from the boat to work on the glass, but it can be done while the window remains installed.
- Remove the rubber glazing from the front of the window.
- Cut the silicone away from the frame on both the front glass and the inside glass.
- Apply generous amounts of Methyl Hydrate and allow it to sit for 5 minutes so that it dissolves the silicone. Continue to cut away the silicone while the Methyl Hydrate is working. The Methyl Hydrate will make the silicone soft and sticky.
- Use the suction cups to pull the glass from the front or gently push on the glass from the inside at one corner or where the silicone is softest. Keep cutting between the frame and the glass to separate the silicone and butyl tape. Apply more Methyl Hydrate as needed to soften the silicone.
- Once the glass is removed, clean and strip all the silicone and butyl tape from the frame.
Installation of the Glass in a Fixed Window
- Once you have a clean aluminum frame, apply butyl tape to the outside edge of the frame. Apply a bead of silicone to the inside edge of the frame.
- Place the new glass into the frame, ensuring it is properly seated on the butyl tape.
- Reinstall the rubber glazing on the front to secure and seal the glass.
- Allow the silicone to cure fully before exposing the window to water or heavy use.
