Window Removal and Installation

Proper removal and installation of marine windows is essential for ensuring durability, a watertight seal, and long-lasting performance. Below you’ll find step-by-step guidance, recommended supplies, and downloadable instructions to help you through the process.

Window Removal Instructions

Removing a marine window requires patience and the right materials.
Our recommended
process
ensures you don’t damage
the frame or glass:

  1. Remove the trim ring (if installed).
  2. Spray Methyl Hydrate (or rubbing alcohol) around the window edges to loosen the Butyl
    and Silicone.
  3. Use a sharp knife to carefully cut away adhesive, gently working the window loose.
  4. If Butyl or Silicone remains inside, apply more Methyl Hydrate and continue trimming.
  5. Work slowly—patience is the key to preserving both the window and the frame.

Window Installation Instructions

Correct installation is critical to prevent leaks and ensure your windows withstand marine
conditions.
Our diagrams and instructions guide you step by step:

  1. Ensure the wall is flat and dry-fit the window before sealing.
  2. Place Butyl tape along the frame as indicated in our diagram.
  3. Run a bead of Silicone behind the Butyl for additional sealing.
  4. Insert the window into the cutout.
  5. Allow the Butyl to ooze out for 24–48 hours, then trim excess and run a finishing bead
    of Silicone around the edge.

Helpful Tips

  • Always take your time—rushing increases the chance of damage.
  • Use only marine-grade sealants for the best results.
  • Keep a clean surface before applying adhesives.
  • If you’re unsure, reach out—our team is happy to help.

Supplies Needed

  • Methyl Hydrate – you can find this at Lordco (if you can’t find Methyl Hydrate, rubbing alcohol will also be effective)
  • Knife

Removal Steps

  1. First thing that you are going to want to do is remove the Trim Ring if you have one.
  2. From the outside spray Methyl Hydrate around your window where there is Butyl and Silicone; This will dissolve and loosen the adhesive properties.
  3. Use a Knife to cut away at the Butyl and Silicone. For this step you will want to be very patient and just take your time. You should be able to gently pull out the window while cutting it away.
  4. Go inside your boat; if you notice a little Butyl and Silicone are on the inside as well apply some more Methyl Hydrate and use your Knife again to cut away at it.
